A driver distracted by a cell phone argument caused a serious pedestrian accident at a Lakewood gas station. The woman injured in the accident still does not know whether or not she will lose her leg as doctors decide if amputation is the best choice.
Lakewood resident Mary Healey was driving her daughter to a church youth group when she ran out of gas. After friends came to her rescue, the 54-year-old Lochburn Middle School secretary was at the 76 gas station filling up when an out-of-control car left the road, drove over a grassy area, and slammed into one of the gas station’s pumps. Healey was pinned between the pump and her minivan, one of her legs crushed.
An initial investigation into the Washington pedestrian accident revealed that 23-year-old Yoni Valencia had been arguing with his mother on his cell phone and became distracted. When a car stopped at a light in the road, he swerved to avoid the accident and drove into the gas station area. He tried to flee from the scene of the accident on foot and has since been charged with hit-and-run and vehicular assault.
Luckily a group of military men were at the station and acted quickly to apply emergency medical treatment on Healey and keep her calm. She is now recovering at home, but faces medical bills she says she can’t afford.
