Lawsuit Settled In Case Of Bellevue Man Killed In Crane Accident

In November 2006, 31-year-old attorney Matt Ammon was killed in his Bellevue apartment when a 210-foot steel construction site tower crane crashed into his home. This month, his wrongful death lawsuit was settled between the contractor and engineering firm and the man's parents.

Lease Crutcher Lewis and Magnusson Klemencic Associates were suited in the King County Superior Court because of the man's death. Ammon's parents and personal injury lawyer put forth that the crane was incorrectly installed and that design flaws caused the fatal construction accident. The official trial was to begin on Monday, but a settlement was reached days before. The details of the settlement have not been made public.

In addition to the settlement involving Ammon, both companies were also cited for workplace safety violations by Washington State - for a combined amount of $15,000. The Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals overturned the fine for MKA, although Lease Crutcher Lewis has a pending lawsuit against the engineering firm. In addition Lease Crutcher has also sued seven other subcontractors that were associated with the crane accident incident. These lawsuits are either pending, dismissed, or settled.

Three other downtown Bellevue buildings were damaged when the crane fell, with the owners of those structures seeking damages from the responsible companies as well. Ammon's apartment was located on the top floor of the Pinnacle Bell Centre building on 108th Avenue Northeast.

After the construction site accident Washington State tightened its regulations on construction cranes and how they are operated.
