The level-2 snowstorm that hit Washington State and the Seattle area a few days before Christmas last month paralyzed the city and made for a surprisingly inconvenient holiday filled with icy roads, snowed-in residents, slowed mail, and stranded travelers. Of even more concern was the fact that winter weather conditions increased incidents of car crashes and slip and fall accidents across the city and state.
A month later, the state held a public forum met to discuss how the government could better prevent accidents and inconveniences the next time a large winter storm rolls through the area. The forum was held at the Southwest Community Center, where city and county officials, utility staff, Washington State Department of Transportation staff, and Washington law enforcement officers gather to discuss how improvements can be made next time.
It snowed over nine inches on December 22, shutting down most of the city and creating dangerous conditions for residents.
"We still have a long winter ahead of us. If a 'Level-2 Storm' occurs again our response will improve by coordinating our department more closely with Metro," said Grace Crunican, director of the Seattle Department of Transportation.
Much of the problems centered on the lack of salt and snowplows on the roads, unplowed city bus routes, and a general lack of snow removal plans that made roads and sidewalks dangerous.
Others brought up the issue of the King County website, which was not quickly updated with storm and safety information.
On the other hand, the police department reported a lack of issues with emergency response during and after the storm.
"Tonight, and actually before this event, people have been telling me that while hunkering down it was frustrating getting out and about, they did seem happy with the police department," sad Captain Greg Schmidt, director of Seattle Police Department's 911 Center. "I monitor the 911 center and we had a good response for service. We're prepared for next time, but I hope there is no 'next time.'"
Mayor Greg Nickels summed up the event by warning the forum-goers that Mother Nature will continue to throw the city curveballs in the future - but next time they will be better prepared and better coordinated.
