A five-year-old girl was seriously injured when she fell through a window screen from a second story window in Lynwood, Washington.
Snohomish County Fire District one reported to the scene of the window fall accident at around seven in the evening on September 5 and the girl was rushed to the hospital by ambulance by emergency response crews. She remains at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle recovering from life-threatening injuries.
The toddler fell from the second-story window when the bottom corner of the screen popped out of place. She fell an estimated 15 feet onto packed dirt below. The child injury and accident is under investigation.
This is the third serious injury caused by a child fall from a window this year in this District of Snohomish County. Leslie Hynes of the Snohomish County Fire Department urged parents to understand that window screens are not meant to support any amount of weight – even the weight of a small child. In fact, window screens are not made to keep children in, they are simply meant to keep things like debris and insects out of your home.
Here are a few more quick window safety tips:
• Do not put furniture, such as couches or tables, in front of a second story window.
• Supervise your children at all times.
• Buy window guards for your windows to add extra safety.
• Lock closed windows.
• Don’t open upper story windows more than a few inches – or open them from the top instead of from the bottom.
