Heraldnet.com reports that a wheelchair-bound man in Warm Beach, Washington, was hit by a bus while crossing the street. The 86-year-old man, who is a resident of the Warm beach Senior Community, was crossing Marine Drive in his motorized wheelchair when the city bus hit the pedestrian a quarter before noon on Tuesday, April 7. He used the crosswalk directly in front of the senior community center, which has about 350 elderly residents.
North County Fire Chief said that the man became trapped beneath the bus and pinned under the bus' wheels. The seriously injured senior was removed from the bus wreck with the Jaws of Life and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was taken to the intensive car unit with life-threatening injuries, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
The bus, which stops at the center about once an hour, was turning right at the time of the accident. A Snohomish County Sheriff spokesperson told reporters that the bus driver, who is a long-time employee of Community Transit, would not be cited or charged in the crash. She was distraught after the accident and was given the rest of the day off. She will remain on leave during the investigation of the case. The bus occupants were taken to their bus stops by van.
The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office and Community Transit will work together to investigate the case.
Witnesses to the accident said the accident happened quickly - with no time to help the elderly man before the bus struck.
