Juanita Beach Park in Washington State was the scene of a dog attack and a dog shooting on Saturday, May 21.
According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a Kirkland man was walking with an off-leash German shepherd in the park when the pair was approached by three off-leash pit bulls. One pit bull lunged at the owner’s dog and the other two soon entered the fray. The owner of the pit bulls tried to separate the dogs, but, according to the Kirkland man and several area witnesses, one of the pit bulls turned his aggression him. The man shot the dog with a handgun.
The pit bull owner collected his pets and rushed to an emergency vet, where the wounded pit bull had surgery. He is expected to recover. The owner of the German shepherd was licensed to legally carry a concealed weapon.
King County Animal Control and Kirkland Police are investigating the dog attack incident. At this time, no charges have been issued and no citations have been issued.
It is important to note that dogs are not allowed off leash in Juanita Beach Park and that the owners of both of the dogs were breaking the leash law at the time of the dog attack. Leash laws are for the protection of both park visitors and pets.
