Just a year after a young boy was killed by metal debris at a Monster Jam show at the Tacoma Dome, the monster truck show is returning to Washington - with no new safety measures in place.

Monster Trucks Return To Tacoma One Year After Child’s Fatal Accident

Posted on Nov 30, 2009

Exactly a year after the death of a six-year-old boy at a monster truck show at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington, the venue is welcoming the promotion back to the stadium for three shows. Despite last year’s fatal child accident at the event, the dome is not taking any extra safety precautions and is not changing any aspect of the event.

Last January, Sebastian Hizey was attending a Monster Jam monster truck rally at the Tacoma Dome when a piece of metal flew off the truck and struck the young boy in the head. He died of his injury. His parents are suing the company that puts on Monster Jam, Feld Motorsports, who claims that the shows are safe. The family says that not only are they still grieving for the loss of their son, but they are also concerned that what happened to their boy could easily happen to someone else.

Monster truck rallies are more dangerous than most think – seven people have been killed at monster truck events since 1992 and even more people have been seriously injured by flying projectiles. In 2007, nine people were injured during a monster truck show in Illinois after a truck crash showered the crowd with debris. While some, such as the director of operation for Monster Jam, believe these incidents are simply freak accidents, others believe that Hizey’s blunt force trauma death could have been prevented and that the monster truck promotions should take more safety precautions such as installing nets to protect the audience.
