Posted on May 21, 2012

A mother and her young daughter were killed in a head-on crash with a dump truck in Whatcom County on Friday morning, May 4, 2012. The Washington State Patrol is asking any witnesses to the crash to come forward and assist with the fatal crash investigation.

According to reports across Washington State, 29-year-old Shyla Alsum was driving on East Pole Road in the town of Everson near Mecklem Road with her two young children, 7-year-old Carter Norsby and 6-year-old Jaidyn. The accident, which took place at about 7:20 in the morning, occurred when Alsum drifted into the other lane and struck a dump truck head on.

Alsum was killed instantly in the Washington car accident, and her daughter Jaidyn died while being transported to the hospital. Carter was rushed to a local hospital before being transferred by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Carter remains in serious condition.

The dump truck driver, who works for a local gardening company and who was transporting soil, suffered minor injuries in the accident. He was taken to the hospital but later released.

State Police are investigating the cause of the accident. Because of the skid marks found at the scene of the crash, officers believe that Alsum could have drifted out of her lane due to distracted driving or fatigued driving.

Seattle car accident attorney Andrew Kim sends his thoughts and condolences to the friends, family, and loved ones of the victims of this crash – and wishes a swift and full recovery to Carter Norsby.
