North Whidbey Sees Two Pit Bull Attacks In Two Days

Posted on Aug 20, 2010

Oak Harbor Police and local animal control officials dealt with not one but two aggressive dog attacks in two days this week – making many wonder about dangerous dog safety in Oak Harbor and the aggressiveness of the pit bull breed.

In the first dog attack, which occurred on Wednesday night, a father and daughter were approached by an aggressive pit bull in their neighborhood. They found safety at a neighbor’s house and then called the police. When an officer arrived on the scene, he was charged several times by the dangerous dog before he used his weapon to shoot the dog.

In the second pit bull attack, which occurred the next day in the Rolling Hills area of Oak Harbor, a grandfather, Washington resident Jim Murdy was watching his two small nephews when he saw that his small corgi was being cornered by a large pit bull. Murdy tried to strike the pit bull and attack it with a hedger, but the dog was determined to act aggressively toward the other pet. Finally, Murdy grabbed the aggressive dog by the collar and was bit on the hand. When to Island County Animal Control officers arrived at the scene, the pit bull cooperated.

The pit bull’s owner said that they had rescued the 13-year-old pit bull from a Seattle pit bull rehabilitation program, and that although it had showed aggression toward other dogs in the past, it had no history of harming humans. The dog escaped from the yard when a gate was left open. The dog’s owners will put the dangerous dog to sleep.
