According to the Seattle Times, 50-year-old Brian Fairbrother, of Seattle, died in a Seattle bicycle crash near a city bike path this week. Authorities say that Fairbrother, who had worked for and managed the independent coffee shop Espresso Vivace for the last 20 years, crashed on an outdoor stairwell when turning onto a public path for cyclists.
The Washington state cyclist accident took place on August 30 at around six in the evening. Fairbrother was found breathing but unresponsive and facedown near the stairs. A bike helmet was located nearby. Emergency responders rushed him to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, but he was soon pronounced brain dead and taken off of life support on Thursday, September 1.
An initial investigation by Seattle Police Department detectives have verified that Fairbrother was riding his bike north on Fairview Avenue North when he came to a fork in which bikers are meant to veer left onto a bike path. Fairbrother was either confused by this intersection or lost control of his bike, falling down the flight of stairs.
The Seattle Department of Transportation stated that they would investigate that area for safety issues, though they had not received complaints about the bike path intersection in the past.
Our thoughts are with the family of Brian Fairbrother during this difficult time.
