High speeds and alcohol may have both been factors in a Oak Harbor dirt bike accident that injured the bike’s driver and critically injured the bike’s passenger.
According to Washington State Patrol and the Whidbey News Times, 21-year-old Christopher Atkinson was driving a dirt bike with 24-year-old Raymond Jackson behind him. The men, both from Oak Harbor, were riding the bike on Wednesday night about six miles out of town on Childrens Avenue when Atkinson lost control of the vehicle and it slammed into a parked car. Neither man was wearing a helmet or other protective gear.
Atkinson was driving a 1989 Yamaha dirt bike and the dirt bike accident occurred at the intersection of Childrens Avenue and Nogaterra Way.
Jackson suffered a head injury, a serious facial laceration, and a knee injury. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he is now listed in serious condition.
According to witnesses to the accident, the dirt bike was speeding and Atkinson may have been intoxicated. Jackson was injured but arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault. He is in the Island County Jail with a bail set at $50,000. There was also an outstanding warrant for the man’s arrest because he did not serve jail time for a previous DUI conviction.
Dirt bike safety helmets are required by law in Washington State as of 2007.
