A two-year-old girl was injured in a car accident in Olympia on Friday night on School Street. According to the Washington State Patrol, the car accident took place because the girl’s mother and the driver of the car was texting on her cell phone at the time of the crash.
The Olympian reports that 29-year-old Tanya Bowers will be cited for operating a vehicle while using a wireless device. She was sending a text message when she drove off of the road and slammed into a parked car, injuring herself and her youngest child. A four-year-old child in the car was not hurt in the collision.
WA police say that the woman was not wearing her seat belt and that neither of her children was properly restrained in child seats – violations for which she will also be charged by authorities. Bowers suffered lacerations to her face when she was propelled into the windshield during the crash, while her toddler also suffered facial injuries when she slammed into the back of the driver’s seat.
Text messaging while driving, talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device, and using a mobile device while driving are all primary offenses in Washington State; that is, you call be cited for using a cell phone while driving even if you are not breaking any other traffic laws. While general cell phone laws have been on the books since 2008, texting and cell phone laws became primary offenses last year.
