The driver of a minivan is dead and the man's five passengers have been critically injured in a I-90 rollover accident outside of Seattle. Washington Police believe that speed may have been a factor in the crash.

One Dead, Five Critically Injured In I-90 Crash Near Seattle

One person is dead and five others have been critically injured in an I-90 rollover crash just outside of Seattle. The fatal Washington car accident took place near Snoqualmie Pass on August 9, 2009, at around 4 PM.

According to Washington State Patrol officers, the car accident occurred when a car driving westbound on Interstate 90 went into the gore zone of an offramp and crashed, flipping several times. At this point officers believe that the men may have been traveling too fast to safely take the offramp and exit the interstate.

The Seattle Times and WSP Trooper Christina Martin reported that the driver of the car had died at the scene, while two others were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Three more passengers were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The minivan involved in the accident was carrying five men, all in their 30s and 40s. While police say that speed might have been a factor in the accident, alcohol was probably not involved. It is unknown if the men were wearing seat belts at the time of the van wreck, though the fact that all of the men were thrown from the vehicle may point to a lack of seat belt use. The accident is still under investigation.

The Monday afternoon accident shut down all lanes of the westbound side of I-90.
