Unfortunately, the first official day of the boating season in Puget Sound was also the first day of boating accidents and boating injuries. On Saturday, May 7, a boat capsized off of Camano Island in Washington State, sending five people into the frigid waters. One person was killed in the boat accident while another was critically injured.
According to local news sources, rescue personnel arrived at the accident scene at just after seven in the morning on Saturday, where an 18-foot boat had capsized after being struck by two large waves. Five people were thrown into the water. While there were lifejackets located on board, no one was wearing a safety vest at the time of the accident.
Nearby boaters pulled four out of five people out of the cold waters in the minutes after the accident, while a Coast Guard rescue swimmer saved the fifth boat accident victim, a 13-year-old boy, who had become trapped under the boat. Three people were treated for hypothermia while a fourth man was pronounced dead at the Tulalip Marina after 45 minutes of CPR by rescue workers. The water temperature was a dangerous 46 degrees.
The boy was flown by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, though his current condition is unknown.
