Some believe that Washington State could benefit from banning pit bulls and other dangerous breeds of dogs, but others believe that it is bad dog owners, not bad dogs, that lead to Seattle dog attacks.

Pit Bull Debate Continues In Washington State

Posted on Dec 29, 2010

As pit bull attacks in Washington State continue to litter the news from time to time, many lawmakers, animal lovers, animal control officers, and pit bull enthusiasts continue to debate whether or not the breed should be better controlled or even banned in the Seattle or Washington area. While some argue that the dogs are some of the most dangerous pets that you can own, others say that their owners are the issue, not the dogs themselves.

One Washington State woman, Jeannette Cunningham, says that she will always be scared of pit bulls – after one attacked her and bit off her lip. She has been left with a permanent scar on her face and a permanent fear of the large, thickly built dogs.

However, others, like Katie Olson of the Seattle Humane Society, says that aggression depends solely on the dog. As someone who tests homeless dogs for adoptability, she says that some dogs are friendly, harmless, and eager to play, while others struggle with aggression, emotional issues, and issues with possessiveness.

Still others, like dog bite expert Chris Davis, think that the reason that pit bulls bite isn’t important. What is important is the fact that they do have a long record of attacking people, injuring humans, and even killing the children and the elderly. The numbers back up his assertion: last year, almost half of the 32 deadly dog attacks in the United States were caused by pit bulls or pit bull mixes. And 60 percent of dog attacks that involve a pack of dogs attacking a human were initiated by pit bulls.
