Last month we brought you the story of a 11-year-old boy who was removed from his Washington home following a dog attack that left the child seriously injured. Now the father involved in the WA dog bite case has been sentenced to 90 days in Clallam County jail for the incident.
According to Port Angeles Police, 38-year-old Matthew Sims left his son with the family’s 50-pound Labrador mix, Jack, so that he could steal a motorcycle. The boy told Washington authorities that he was walking by the dog and his bone when the dog attacked his hands, face, and arms. The boy then went to a neighbor’s house in search of medical assistance. It is unclear why the boy was not attending school.
The man responded to an ad for a used motorcycle – he asked to owner if he could take a spin around the block and then never returned with the vehicle. When Sims was questioned, he had the key to the motorcycle in his jacket.
Sims entered the Alford plea in court – a plea that does not admit guilt but that does recognize that a jury would probably find him guilty. He will serve two concurrent sentences – one month for stealing the motorcycle and three months for having a dangerous dog.
The dog had been involved in another dog attack in Alaska in 2005 and is now being held in isolation at the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society animal shelter. His fate is unclear. The boy is in foster care under the direction of Child Protective Services. The mother, who does not have custody of the child, has been altered to her son’s whereabouts and the dog attack.
