Between three hundred and four hundred truckers at the Port of Seattle are on strike, and dozens of Washington businesses are struggling to receive shipments of goods while many of their tractor-trailer engines are silent. The truck drivers say they won’t return to work until their job conditions are safer.
The truck drivers are telling reporters that they believe the conditions at the Port of Seattle are dangerous to the drivers and dangerous to the public – those who have to share the roads with the trucks. The management, the truckers complain, often force them to carry overweight loads. At the same time, they worry about the faulty equipment that could cause serious truck accidents or result in heavy fines.
An investigation into the safety conditions at the Port of Seattle found that the truckers may well be right to walk off of the job; of the 15 trucks inspected by the Washington State Patrol and Seattle Police over one day, seven of the tractor-trailers were overweight.
While the Port of Seattle says that their operations have slowed, they did not say that the incident would lead to any changes regarding their truck drivers or trucking regulations. In the meantime, many of the truckers believe not changing the system will lead to more continued dangerous workplace conditions and more Washington truck accidents.
