After a discussion at a recent Southwest Seattle District Council meeting, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has confirmed that their crews will install a full traffic signal at the intersection of Avalon Way and Southwest Genesee in West Seattle. In addition, SDOT reported that they would also replace the curbs at the intersection so that they are updated and better suited for use by the disabled.
Residents have complained for years that the intersection is extremely dangerous for cars and pedestrians because of the slope and curve of Avalon Way and because of the growing population in the area caused by new condo construction. Those in the area almost unanimously approve of the new light and sidewalk, which is expected to be installed in the fall of this year. However, some add that the street still needs a bike lane to make the area safer for cyclists.
SDOT also announced that it would not be adding a traffic light at the intersection of Admiral and 47th – even five years after a fatal Seattle pedestrian accident took place. While SDOT recognized the need for at least a pedestrian signal at the intersection – which is located near several schools – they stated that they simply did not have the funds to add safety features to the area in 2012.
