A six-month-old baby has died as the result of a dog bite to the head, according to the state medical examiner’s office.
National news sources report that the infant, Salvador Miguel Cotto and his mother Sara Cotto had traveled from Seattle to the east coast to visit relatives at the time of the dog bite incident. The family said that the baby was in a room with the family’s dog, Polar, when they heard the dog grunt from the next room, where they were eating lunch. Some blood on the baby’s head revealed that the dog had bitten the baby. The baby died from a cerebral edema, brain swelling.
Polar, a deaf bulldog with no history of aggression or violence, was euthanized by animal control a week later, according to the dog attack laws of the state. Many animal lovers were outraged that the dog was blamed for the incident, even though it was a fatal one.
Police investigated the fatal dog attack and have decided not to file charges against the dog’s owners. It is important to note, for the safety of others, that it is never advisable to leave an infant alone with a dog, even in the next room, and that deaf dogs can be prone to biting if they are surprised.
