During the Seattle Humane Society’s “Spring for a Dog” adoption promotion, the Bellevue animal shelter has a surprising focus: adopting one of the shelter’s many pit bulls.
While many hold the misconception that all pit bull are prone to biting or attacking humans, this is not the case, explained one Seattle Humane Society staffer. Put bills can become dangerous if they are abused, neglected, or taught to be violent, but many of the animals are just as cute and friendly as other breeds of dog. The staffer added that none of the pit bulls up for adoption at the shelter had a history of biting or dog attacks, and that all of them had passed adoptability tests before being made available to families.
Instead of painting the dogs as fighters and biters, the Seattle Humane Society says that many of the dogs who need homes are loving, athletic, and loyal. When paired with the right family and given the love and attention they need, many dogs will flourish – and during this spring’s promotion, those adopting a pit bull that is older than one year will receive 50 percent off of the adoption fees plus a free starter kit that contains feeding bowls, a leash, and a toy.
The Seattle Humane Society treats pit bulls as they do any other breed – the dogs are given an extra evaluation, but are otherwise put through the same process as all dogs. Many other shelters – in Washington State and across the country – choose not to adopt out pit bulls and instead put them to sleep.
