After two more fatal Seattle bike accidents in a matter of weeks, city officials are reviewing Seattle's bike safety programs and considering further improvements to the city's bike lanes. So far in 2011, a dozen people have died in cyclist accidents.
The most recent bike accident death took place last weekend when local sandwich deliveryman Robert Townsend was traveling downhill on University Way Northeast. A car turned left in front of the biker. Police are still investigating the deadly crash and determining who was at fault.
Last week, 50-year-old Brian Fairbrother, a well-known Seattle barista, was killed in a one-vehicle bike accident when he biked down a stairwell at what some believe is a poorly marked bike lane intersection.
Seattle's Cascade Bicycle Club held a news conference after the twelfth deadly bike accident in which they discussed infrastructure improvements, bike safety, and bridging the relationship between cyclists and other drivers. At the same time, Seattle officials are considering widening bike lane markings in locations like Dexter Avenue, as well as narrowing car lanes to slow traffic in heavily biked areas.
An average of ten people per year are killed in Seattle bike accidents, and Washington State has long been recognized as a leader in bike safety.
