According to the Seattle Times, a man who was paralyzed in a Washington State car accident won a $30 million personal injury lawsuit against both the truck that struck him and those responsible for designing the onramp where the car crash took place.
In 2007, 30-year-old Koti Hu was waiting at a light on the Northeast 70th street onramp to northbound I-405 when a painting truck slammed into the back of his car. Hu was paralyzed from the chest down due to severe neck injuries and spinal cord injuries and now requires around-the-clock care. Since the car accident, he moved back home with his parents.
Hu took his car accident lawsuit to a King County court, where his car accident attorneys argued that the Washington State Department of Transportation was partially responsible for the crash because of the poor design of the road: the stop line was not visible to drivers and the ramp was curved in such a way that oncoming vehicles drive blindly to the metered stop. The jury agreed, deciding that the pickup truck company was 60 percent at fault for the accident, while WSDOT was 40 percent at fault for the accident.
WSDOT says that they will most likely appeal the decision and that they respectfully disagree with the jury’s findings.
Hu’s $30 million in damages will pay for a lifetime of nursing care. Before the accident, he was a musician who was also very involved in his family’s church.
