An investigation into the recent fatal bicycle accident on an Eastlake path in Seattle has revealed that city officials had received complaints in the past that the area was dangerous to cyclists.
In late August, Brian Fairbrother was biking on Fairview Avenue North along the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop when he mistook a turn in the bike path and instead crashed down a flight of stairs. He suffered a severe brain injury and was taken off life support a week after the accident. Many in the Seattle biking community commented that the area, which is described as a multi-use path, is confusing for those on bikes.
Now, Michael Hoffman, a 31-year-old scientist at the University of Washington, has come forward to say that he emailed city officials about the dangerous staircase in 2008, after the loop was completed. In an email to Parks Department, he stated that the area was confusing, as bikers need to travel against the flow of traffic in that area and that the staircase isn't visible and could be mistaken as a ramp.
The Parks Department responded to the email by agreeing that it was confusing to ride in the counterclockwise direction and that Hoffman's comments would be shared as officials worked on further plans for the loop.
Fairbrother was one of three cyclists to die in a matter of weeks on Seattle streets. Ten cyclists have been killed in the Seattle area this year.
