Seattle Pays Injured Man $650K After Collision With Police Car

The City of Seattle has taken responsibility for a car accident involving a resident and a police cruiser two winters ago. Seattle has settled the personal injury claim related to the accident for $650,000 and admitted officially that they are liable for the man’s injuries and the consequences of the crash.

The car accident took place in the Sodo neighborhood of the city in February 2009 during icy weather. 26-year-old Seattle Police Officer John Welch was traveling approximately 40 miles per hour on the Fourth Avenue South Bridge when he struck ice and lost control of his car. His cruiser crossed the centerline and slammed head-on into a car driven by 51-year-old Donald Meyer.

Myer received a number of serious injuries in the WA car accident, including back injuries, neck injuries, and chest injuries. He still suffers the consequences of the crash regularly. Although he has finally returned to the job he had before the accident, he lost out on months of wages.

In March of last year, he filed an injury lawsuit for $1 million. This week, the City of Seattle settled the case, saying that they felt the compensation was fair and that they would like to avoid a trial. The city did not say whether Welch faced any discipline regarding the accident or underwent any further training to prevent future accidents.
