A recent dog bite case in Magnolia has put a spotlight on the ambiguous wording of the definition of a dangerous dog in Seattle.
In January, a man was walking in a Magnolia park when he approached a pit bull on a leash. When the man bent down to pet the dog, however, the pit bull lunged and the man’s face and ripped off the man’s lip. The man required stitches as well as several reconstructive surgeries to fix his injury.
Initially, the dog, Bambu, was declared a dangerous dog and his owner was given two choices: put the dog to sleep, or send the dog out of the Seattle area. The owner transferred his dog to a troubled dog compound in Snohomish County and then petitioned the decision. The examiner who heard the appeal decided that the lip laceration was not a “severe injury” as the code read at the time of the attack and will allow the dog to return to Seattle with its owner.
After this pit bull case and another similar case, Seattle’s City Council has changed its definition of a severe injury to “nerve damage, a single broken one, or a single disfiguring wound requiring medical attention.” However, some worry that this new definition is tougher but also more vague than the old definition – especially the passage about a single wound requiring medication attention.
