Seattle Police Warn Parents Of The Dangers Of Sledding

Posted on Dec 30, 2010

Seattle got its first big snow storm this month – but while many knew to be cautious on city roads, far fewer people understood the hidden dangers in sledding. However, the risk of accident and injury during a sledding trip is all too familiar to city fire departments and ambulances – this week alone authorities say that they responded to at least a dozen sledding accidents in the Seattle area. According to the Seattle Fire Department, they received emergency calls for child sledding accidents at Golden Gardens Park, Discovery Park, and Jackson Park Golf Course.

Seattle Police reminded residents this week that sledding isn’t just dangerous, it is illegal in some cases. Whether or not a city street is closed because of weather conditions, it is always against the law to sled on the street. Breaking this law will result in a fine of over $100.

This most recent snow storm and slew of sledding accidents reminds emergency responders of another grouping of sledding injuries that occurred in February 1989, when a large snow storm meant thousands of Seattle’s children headed to a local hill with friends and family. In just three days, 125 children were seriously injured in accidents and four people died in sledding crashes. One girl, 12-year-old Karen Maleng, who was sledding on McGraw Street (which was closed due to snow at the time) was sledding on an inner tube with three other girls when the vessel slid under a car, leaving Maleng with a fatal head injury. She died several hours after the accident.
