After protesters held a demonstration regarding pedestrian safety in Seattle last month, the Washington State city is unveiling a new pedestrian master plan aimed at reducing pedestrian injuries and pedestrian accidents.
The Seattle Pedestrian Master Plan strives to make Seattle the country's most walkable city by attempting to:
· Improve the walkability of the city.
· Increase pedestrian safety and reduce pedestrian accidents.
· Create more public spaces that encourage walking.
· Increase the amount of walking for both transportation and health reasons.
The plan was outlined by Mayor Greg Nickels and the City Council in 2007 - and in the past, Nickels has said that improving pedestrian safety was a top priority for his term. A large part of the problem, city officials agree, is that drivers are not aware of pedestrians in the streets - even when in clearly marked crosswalks.
Last year, 468 pedestrians were struck by cars and trucks inside the Seattle city limits. In the last two years, 23 people have been killed in pedestrian accidents on Seattle streets and hundreds more have suffered from serious and even permanent injuries.
Although some measures will be taken to optimize traffic signals and make crossings safer, the biggest change will have to come from driver awareness. Drivers need to slow down, pay attention, and look out for pedestrians using city streets. Seattle police have begun sting operations on busy city intersections in which plain-clothed officers attempt to cross the street - and in which careless or reckless drivers can be caught in the act.
Ten more crosswalk stings are planned for this year.
