An 18-year-old boy lost a finger during a fireworks accident on July 4 in Seattle, according to the Queen Anne View. The Seattle Fire Department responded to a call from the West Queen Anne Playfield on Independence Day, where they said a number of teens and young people were detonating fireworks and blowing up trashcans.
The teen who was injured told authorities that he was walking through the park when he saw an explosive. When he picked it up, it detonated in his hand. The young man was knocked unconscious from the explosion, suffered burns, and lost one finger in the incident. Emergency responders rushed the boy to Harborview Medical Center for treatment.
In another Fourth of July fireworks accident, a man setting off fireworks in Poulsbo, Washington, was airlifted to the hospital after an explosion on his boat in Liberty Bay. While authorities are not sure of the condition of the man, the explosion was quite large according to responders.
The Seattle Fire Department stressed that lighting fireworks in Seattle is illegal and that dozens of residents are injured each year from fireworks-related accidents. In addition, the SFD puts out dozens of dangerous fires each year caused by the illegal explosives.
