Washington State Patrol responded to the scene of a fatal hit-and-run car accident on Interstate 5 in Seattle this week.
According to the Seattle Times, 51-year-old tow truck driver William Anthony Padilla (known to friends as Tony) was helping a stranded motorist on the shoulder of I-5 after a minor car accident when he was struck by another car and killed. According to witnesses, a vehicle in the HOV lane carrying two passengers lost control, crossed five lanes of traffic, and slammed into Padilla, the tow truck, and the disabled vehicle. Padilla was kneeling at the left front side of the car at the time of the crash.
The car accident, which took place on Friday morning in the southbound lanes of I-5 near the Spokane Street exit, is one of many shoulder car accidents that occur in Washington State and the Seattle area. Padilla, who had worked for GT Towing company for five years, died at the scene of the accident. The two people who were in the car that struck him were not seriously injured.
After the deadly car accident, the car that struck the tow truck driver fled from the scene without offering assistance. They were soon apprehended by Washington State Patrol near the Michigan street ramp and booked at the King County Jail. Police believe that both the driver and the passenger were under the influence or drugs or alcohol at the time of the car accident.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the tow truck driver is expected to face multiple charges.
