A new dog bite study conducted in Seattle, Washington, reveals that pit bulls may be as dangerous and aggressive as some breed-specific ban advocates say. Pit bulls were responsible for almost 60% of all fatal dog bites in the last three years across the country.

Seattle-Based DogsBite.org Releases Dog Attack Fatality Study

Posted on May 03, 2009

Based in Seattle, Washington, DogsBite.org is a national dog bite victim advocacy group that is focused on awareness and, ultimately, the reduction of dog attacks across the country. This week, the group released a report on U.S. dog attack fatalities over the last three years.

The report, which covers the 88 fatal dogs attacks between 2006 and 2008, analyze dog bite statistics such as dog bite breed information, dog bite victim information (such as age) and dog bite incidence information (such as where the dog attacks took place.

Pit bulls were responsible for the vast majority of dog attacks, with 59% of fatalities involving a pit bull and a fatal pit bull attack occurring every three weeks. The study also found that pit bulls are prominent in attacks that take place off of the dog bite victim's property, with a staggering 81% of off-property dog fatalities caused by pit bulls. In addition, while most non pit bull dog attacks involve young children or senior citizens, pit bulls are also responsible for killing strong, healthy adults aged 21 to 54.

Senior citizens suffer most often from dog bites and dog attacks, with one in four dog mauling deaths involving those 55 and older. Children are also more common victims of dog bites, with children 2-4 suffering in one out of five fatal dog bite attacks.

Dogsbite.com focus much of their research on the dangers of pit bulls and advocates for breed-specific bans of the historically aggressive dog.
