Shoreline Pedestrian Dies Trying To Cross I-5

Posted on Jan 28, 2009

On January 4, a 44-year-old Shoreline, WA, man was killed while walking across I-5 near the West Seattle Bridge exit of the interstate near South Seattle. The Seattle Post Intelligencer, the Seattle Times, KOMO News, and Examiner.com report that the man was hit by two Hondas traveling southbound on the road.

The incident took place late on Saturday night before 11 PM, and Seattle Fire Department officials and emergency responders worked to free the pedestrian's body from the second car that hit the man. He was reported dead soon after. The Washington State Department of Transportation reported that three lanes of traffic were blocked during the incident.

Neither driver was hurt during the pedestrian accident, according to a spokeswoman from the Washington State Patrol.

One of the drivers was a 21-year-old man from Kent, WA. His 1997 Honda suffered significant body damage although he was able to leave the scene after talking with State Patrol troopers. Police estimate his car had roughly $1,000 worth of damage. The other driver was a 35-year-old man from Oregon who was driving a 2002 Honda. His car was not damaged in the incident and he, too, was allowed to leave the scene after meeting with authorities. Neither driver was issued a citation for their involvement with the fatal pedestrian accident.

Authorities report that they believe drugs or alcohol were not a factor in this case, in both the case of the pedestrian and in the case of the drivers. It is not yet apparent why the man was on I-5 on foot or why he attempted to cross the multiple-lane highway. His name is not being release by authorities until his family is located and notified.

It is illegal to walk on the shoulder or cross interstates on foot in Washington State.
