Six-Year-Old Boy Killed By Debris At Monster Truck Show

Posted on Jan 19, 2009

The Seattle Times reports that a young Puyallup, WA boy was killed by flying debris during a monster truck show at the Tacoma Dome over the weekend. Six-year-old Sebastian Hizey was stuck by an unidentified piece of metal weighing roughly ten pounds during the first of five scheduled shows scheduled for the day's events. The unidentified object flew an estimated 30 to 50 feet off one of the vehicles and into the stands.

"This type of incident has never happened before in the history of Monster Jam events," said event promoter Feld Motor Sports in a statement. "All of us at Feld Motor Sports and all the Monster Jam drivers and crew extend our deepest sympathies to the families involved. We will continue to investigate this incident and will provide additional information as it becomes available."

Paramedics were on-scene, as they always are, and preformed CPR on the child in the minutes after the accident. The, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office, the boy was taken to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The family added the information that the child died from a severe brain injury.

Another spectator, a man, was also hit by the object and treated for injuries at a local hospital.

"You go out for a night of fun, and you lose your son," Hizey told The Tacoma News Tribune, "[He] was a very funny kid, a very good kid," his dad said.

Tacoma deputy city manager Rey Arellano told reporters that an investigation into the matter is underway. As part of the investigation, the truck involved, a monster truck called "Natural High," is being examined to find a cause for the malfunction. According to Seattlepi.com, the accident was probably caused by a malfunctioning drivetrain, pieces of which flew into the crowd.

While some think that the accident was a "freak occurrence," others are concerned that this incident could happen again and that the monster truck industry should take precautions at future shows.
