
A ski boat piloted by a 17-year-old Lake Stevens teen slammed into a rowing shell on Lake Stevens this week, killing one and sending one other into the lake.
Lake Stevens Police say that 42-year-old Dave Balbirona was killed while rowing with the Lake Stevens rowing club. His body was recovered in the hours after the crash. Balbirona, a rowing, cycling, and outdoors enthusiast, was also a loving family man who left behind a wife and four children.
Water rescue teams from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office and the Seattle police harbor patrol joined Lake Stevens Police in the body recovery efforts.
The investigation of the Washington boat accident will take place this week – as of now, police are working to discover why the boat collision took place. Currently, they know that they ski boat was preparing to tow a water skier in the moments before the boat accident and that the glare on the water was significant as the sun was setting.
Another boy on the boat, 17-year-old Clint Houghton, said that his friend is a caring and responsible student who would be devastated to know he had been a part of the fatal boating accident.
The last fatal boat accident to take place at Lake Stevens occurred in July of last summer, when a ski boat flipped with ten people aboard. One person died.
