According to the Seattle Times, a 42-year-old resident of Snohomish was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that has left her in critical condition in a Seattle Hospital.
Washington police say that the woman was driving through a Lakewood Crossing intersection in North Maryville when a pizza deliveryman made a left turn in front of her motorcycle. The motorcycle crashed into the passenger side of the car.
A Marysville police cruiser was also at the intersection and was able to provide immediate assistance to the injured woman. Eventually, the motorcyclist was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries – she is still at the hospital with a traumatic head injury. It is not know whether or not the woman was wearing a helmet at the time of the motorbike crash.
The driver of the car that was turning left was not injured in the accident. Washington police had the man, a 22-year-old Everett resident who was returning to the pizza parlor, take a drug and alcohol test as part of the investigation.
Accidents in which a motorist turns left in front of an oncoming motorcycle are very common. Many safety advocates believe that these crashes often take place because motorcycles can be difficult to see. In order to prevent these accidents, traffic safety advocates recommend that drivers become more aware of motorcyclists on the road and that motorcyclist be sure to turn on their headlight even during daylight hours.
