According to reports from K5 Local News, a female garbage truck driver was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Wednesday, May 20, when the commercial truck collided with an SUV and then hit an embankment. Although a nearby member of the Navy saw the accident and rushed to the woman's aid, his attempts at CPR did not revive the victim.
A 32-year-old garbage truck driver from Tacoma, Washington was thrown from her on-the-job vehicle and then run over by the truck. The truck accident took place near 196th street and Canyon Road East.
The SUV that some say caused the crash was being driven by a Frederickson, Washington, woman who also had two children in the car. Someone close to the woman told reporters that she was under stress due to tough times and an ailing mother at the time of the crash.
The dump truck was owned by Lemay, a company that has a contract with Pierce County for garbage disposal services. Both the company and local authorities are investigating whether or not the dump truck malfunctioned. Lemay reported that it had not had a fatal accident in the last seven years of operation.
Investigators are also looking into whether there was a problem with the garbage truck driver's seatbelt - and if she was wearing one at all. It is company policy to wear a seat belt while on the job. No charges have been filed in relation to this fatal Washington State truck accident.
