Teens Rescued After Dragon Boat Capsizes In Lake Washington

The Seattle Fire Department and Good Samaritans pulled over a dozen teens from cold and choppy waters last week after a dragon boat capsized in Lake Washington.

A Leschi couple who lives on the shore of the lake saw the boat accident take place and immediately called 911 and boarded their 25-foot boat to assist the rescue. The couple boated out about 150 yards into the lake and pulled out twelve children as the Seattle Police Harbor Patrol and Fire Department arrived on site to rescue the remaining children. After the children were safe, the dragon boat was towed to a nearby beach.

The children spent about ten minutes in the water, which is cold despite the summer temperatures. All of the children, who were teens of all ages, were wearing life jackets and had been trained regarding what to do in the event of an accident. No one was seriously injured in the boat accident, though emergency responders said that many were chilly from the water and shaken up.

A dragon boat is a long, narrow boat powered by a number of paddlers and decorated with festive dragon heads and tails. Invented in China, dragon boat races and dragon boat festivals are becoming increasingly popular in the United States.
