After months without a deadly incident, two cyclists have been killed in traffic accidents in the Seattle area in the last two weeks. They are the first two cyclist fatalities of 2011. There was one deadly bike accident in Seattle in 2010 and four in 2009.
This week, 44-year-old Michael Wang was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on his deadly commute to work on Dexter Avenue – one of the main corridors for bike commuters in the city. He was making a left turn onto Thomas Street when witnesses say he was struck by a brown SUV which left the scene without helping the injured man. His wife, Claire Allen, said that her husband biked to work for his health, the environment, money reasons – and because he enjoyed it.
In the last week of July, 49-year-old John Przychodzen of Kirkland was biking on Northeast Juanita Drive when an 18-year-old driver lost control of his pickup truck and hit the man. He later told authorities he was swerving to miss striking another vehicle. Przychodzen’s relatives have hired a personal injury attorney to investigate the details of the crash.
As more bike riders hit the street in Seattle, city officials say they realize the need for more education, more bike lanes, and other safety measures.
