Two Multi-Vehicle Accidents Close 520 Bridge To Seattle

Posted on Feb 27, 2009

According to Northwest Cable News, a number of car accidents on the morning of Monday, February 9, 2009 have closed the 520 Bridge in Seattle, Washington. The two multi-vehicle accidents, which included cars, trucks, and buses, shut down the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge in both directions from roughly 5 am in the morning to 7 am in the morning, affecting morning commutes especially for those that take the bus over the bridge and into the city.

Washington State Patrol Officers responded to the first accident at 5 am, which was caused when a car stalled in one of the eastbound lanes on the bridge. The stalled vehicle caused two other cars to collide. The State Patrol as well as the Washington State Department of Transportation Incident Response Team closed the eastbound lanes to clean up the accident.

The next accident occurred a half-hour later, as a stalled vehicle in the westbound lanes caused a metro bus to clip a truck. This small pile-up caused the closure of the westbound lanes and caused the city to re-route buses over different bridges. In both directions, traffic backed up for miles as commuters attempted to get to work. Metro buses took I-90 into the city, greatly lengthening bus commutes as well. Those who boarded buses at the Evergreen Point or Montlake Freeway stops were told to seek alternate stops in order to travel into Seattle. Both accidents happened mid-span.

Crews re-opened the bridge in both directions at around 7 am. No one was seriously injured in either of the crashes.

In addition to the blockages on Highway 520, another accident on Highway 18 the same morning also blocked traffic west of the Raging River Bridge in Preston, Washington. This accident also happened at about 5:30 am, according to authorities.
