The Columbian reports that two teen or pre-teen children were killed while walking on railroad tracks in Woodland, Washington. One boy and one girl were fatally struck by an oncoming Amtrak train at around 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. Cowlitz County officials say that the accident did not occur at a legal train track crossing, but instead took place between two nearby crossings about 1/4 a mile south of downtown Woodland.
It is illegal for pedestrians to walk along train tracks, and the two children were on private property. BNSF Railway, who owns the tracks along with Union Pacific and Amtrak, said that the railway leads to Seattle and that the two children were trespassing. About 50 trains use the tracks each day.
Authorities are speculating that the two children did not hear the train approaching behind them because a freight train was passing them on the east tracks, creating a great deal of noise. The Amtrak conductor repeatedly blew his warning whistle and put on the train's breaks, but reported that neither child responded to the noise. The names of the two children have not been released.
"It is speculated that they were unable to hear the approaching Amtrak because of the sound of the freight train," the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office said in a released statement.
The train was traveling at about 75 miles an hour at the time of the train accident. The two tracks were closed for four hours after the accident so that the train accident could be investigated.
