Washington Animal Control: Summer Is Dog Bite Season

Posted on Jun 12, 2010

Summer in Washington State is about spending time outdoors, getting a break from school, and enjoying warm days in the sun. But as Wenatchee Valley Humane Society reminds us this month, summer is also the prime time for dog bites to take place around the state. With more people and dogs outside – and with more kids participating in outdoor activity – a rise in calls to Washington Animal Control regarding dog attacks and aggressive dogs begin as soon as school lets out and continues into the beginning of fall. In April alone, seven dog attacks were reported in the Wenatchee area.

What should Washington residents remember about dog bite season? Washington Animal Control Sergeant Jody White says that in particular, joggers and bikers should be wary and aware when out on Washington roads this summer. Last year, jogger Val Kesterson of Wenatchee was attacked by a dog on Malaga Alcoa Highway, receiving serious, to-the-bone bite injuries on her arm and thigh. A year later, the WA dog bite victim has now returned to long distance running, but now carries mace with her.

White also advises parents to teach their children about dog safety, as many don’t know to stay away from strange dogs or what to do if they are approached by an aggressive dog.

Finally, White recommends that Washington residents report aggressive dogs and loose dogs to animal control to prevent future dog bites and dog attacks. Aggressive dog owners in Washington are required to have $250,000 in insurance in case their dogs attack a human, and potentially dangerous dogs can be required to be contained at all times.
