A two-year-old boy is dead in a rural town south of Seattle after he wandered from his mother’s eye at their home in Matlock, Washington. Authorities say that the boy drowned in an accident at a creek near his family’s property.
According to the Examiner, toddler Jacob Chappel of Mason County, was riding a motorized four-wheeler toy when his mother answered a cell phone call and had a conversation that took less than sixty seconds. When she looked for her son, there was no sign of him. When she couldn’t find him in the vicinity, she immediately called for help.
The rescue team located the boy's body in the water in under an hour shortly after finding his four-wheeler in Dry Bed Creek. The boy was unconscious and all efforts to resuscitate him failed. The waters were especially high due to a recent rainfall.
While the drowning incident will be investigated by the Mason County Sheriff’s Department and by the Mason County Coroner’s Office, police say that the death seems to be a simple, tragic drowning accident.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, drowning is a leading cause of death for children aged one to four. Twenty percent of all drowning accidents that occur involve children under the age of fourteen. What are the best ways to keep your children safe from a drowning accident?
