Washington State drivers are already facing tough weather conditions this year, with a snow and ice storm affecting much of the state last weekend. Since winter weather conditions are somewhat rare in much of the region, many drivers do not have the vehicles to handle the conditions or the knowledge to know how to act safely.
This week, MarketWatch and PEMCO Insurance brought readers a helpful guide to driving in snow and how and when to abandon your car safely.
First and foremost, the article recommended that drivers should simply stay off of the roads in adverse weather if they can, especially if they do not have much experience driving in the snow and ice.
However, sometimes people need to get on the road, and other times weather conditions can changes quickly mid-trip. If you have to leave, tell someone where you are going and always have emergency supplies in your truck: flares, snow chains, blankets, water, and gravel (for getting your car out of ice) are always helpful.
If conditions get so bad that you cannot safely stay on the road, follow the tips below:
· Stay with your car if you possibly can.
· Get as far off the actual roadway as you safely can - you don't want other vehicles hitting you or sliding into your car. You also do not want your vehicle towed.
· Leave on your hazard lights. Not doing so could make you responsible for any accident that occurs.
· Call for help if you have a cell phone. Do not leave for help if you are not dressed warmly, if you have health issues, or if help is very far away.
· If you have to leave your vehicle, leave a note on the windshield so that anyone who hits your car can contact you. However, realize that hit-and-run accidents are far more common in wintry weather when visibility is low.
