Although it is now July, cold water in mountain lakes still present a danger to swimmers in Washington State. This was certainly true last week, when a Seattle man drowned in Lake Sammamish during a family summer outing to Sammamish State Park.
According to witnesses, 23-year-old Geronimo Morales was swimming inside of the designated swimming area on the Lake Sammamish Beach when he became fatigued and slipped under the surface of the water. His wife and five-year-old son were with him in the water, but could not locate him after he went under the murky surface. Rescue workers found his body a half-hour after the search began. While EMS preformed CPR on Morales and then rushed him to Overlake Medical Center in Bellevue, Washington, the man was soon pronounced dead.
According to Morales’ wife, the three were swimming with an inflatable raft in the lake, with the son atop the raft and the couple along side. When the child slipped into the water, the couple became fatigued getting the boy back on the raft. During the incident, Morales swallowed water and then went under. Though the man knew how to swim, it is deceptively easy to become fatigued, especially in cold water.
There have not been lifeguards at Sammamish Lake since 2008, despite the lake’s popularity with swimmers. Washington State cut many lifeguard programs recently due to budget concerns.
