Washington State Police and the Seattle Times report that a Good Samaritan rescued a commercial trucker after driving his tractor-trailer into the Duwamish River on Wednesday afternoon.
According to a Washington State spokesperson, a currently unidentified truck driver was carrying a load of processed fish along Route 99 in King County when he lost control of his vehicle near the intersection of Route 509. The big rig ran into the road’s guardrail before running off of the road and into the water.
As the truck drifted down the river, a passerby jumped to the rescue and pulled the driver out of the vehicle through a sunroof. Police report that they were never able to identify and thank the man who saved the driver.
After the accident, the trucking company hired another company to remove the truck from the river and clean up the accident scene. Traffic on the road was halted as officials investigated the accident and as two cranes and other heavy equipment worked to remove the 18-wheeler.
The King County Sheriff’s Department, the Tukwila Fire Department, and the Washington State Patrol assisted with the Washington truck accident response.
It is unclear what caused the truck driver to drift off of the road.
