A water taxi crash in downtown Seattle this month that injured seven people may have been caused by a mechanical failure. According to the Seattle Times, the Rachel Marie slammed into a dock as it was landing on Alaska Way in Washington State on Sunday, September 26.
The King County boat has operated regularly for years between Seacrest Dock and Pier 55 and was transporting a number of Seattle Seahawks fans to a game at the time of the boat accident. The operators of the boat, which is owned by Four Seasons Marine Services in Silverdale and maintained by King County, say that the vessel did not seem to go into reserve as usual as the boat approached the dock – and that a mechanical failure was probably to blame for the collision. The boat was going approximately seven miles per hour at the time that it hit the dock.
Seven people suffered minor injuries in the boat accident – though the boat’s operators asked all occupants to sit down and grab hold of something in the seconds before the impact. No one was hospitalized overnight. The boat accident caused significant damage to the dock and the boat. Regular service was suspended.
The Coast Guard and King County are investigating the boat crash. The crew of the boat are being tested for drugs and alcohol, though an initial investigation points to a mechanical failure that caused the boat’s reverse function to cease working. Crew error is another possible cause of the boat accident.
