A Port Angeles widow and her son plan to file a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit against Olympic National Park after her husband was gored to death by a mountain goat during a day hike in October. The family claims that park officials knew that the goat that attacked the man was aggressive and dangerous – and that they did not respond appropriately during and after the incident.
Last fall, 63-year-old Bob Boardman and his wife Susan Chadd were hiking on Klahhane Ridge in the park and had stopped for lunch when a mountain goat approached them and began threatening them. They left the spot and attempted to hike back to the trailhead, with the goat following them for a mile. Finally, unharassed, the goat attacked Boardman, goring him in an artery in his throat and then standing over his bleeding body. When park rangers arrived, they suggested throwing rocks at the dangerous animal. Boardman, medical professionals say, was probably dead within minutes of the attack.
Now Chadd and her son, Jacob Haverfield, have filed $10 million in wrongful death claims and over $22,000 in personal injury claims. The park has until November to respond to the negligence-based lawsuit.
The mountain goat was shot by park officials and an autopsy found it was normal and healthy.
