The Seattle Times reports that the family of a man tragically killed by a dump truck while biking has received a private settlement from the truck company responsible for the fatal cyclist accident.
In September of 2007, two friends, Caleb Hall and 19-year-old Bryce Lewis were biking in Seattle in a designated bike lane on Eastlake Avenue near University Bridge. Without warning, a Nelson & Sons dump truck made a right turn into the bike lane, striking both young men.
The driver seemed unaware that he had hit the two bicycle riders and dragged the two men down Fuhrman Avenue before stopping. Hall was not dragged under the truck and did not suffer serious injuries. Lewis, however, was dragged under the truck and killed in the bike accident. An autopsy revealed that Lewis died of blunt force trauma to the head - neither rider was wearing a helmet. Witnesses differ on whether the dump truck was speeding or paused before turning, or on whether the bikers were riding aggressively.
The accident resulted in heightened biker awareness throughout Seattle, with cyclist demonstrations aimed at increasing biker safety in Washington State.
This week, Lewis' mother and father settled their wrongful death lawsuit against the dump truck company - although the compensation they receive will not be made public.
The bike accident attorney for the family told reporters that he hopes that the settlement will make bike riders, drivers, and city officials more aware of cyclist safety issues in Seattle.
